What is improv?

Improv is short for ‘improvised theatre’. Unlike traditional plays, we don’t memorise scripts or use a set and props; instead, we rely on the audience’s input to inspire stories & sketches. The plot, characters & dialogue of the scenes are created completely in the moment. We still place a lot of emphasis on good acting and storytelling, but everything’s made up, as they say, on the spot.

Whose Line Is It Anyway? is one of the biggest examples of great improv! Actors have improvised some of their best lines on the big screen, e.g. in Star Wars (Leia: "I love you" Han Solo: "I know"), or on the small screen, like The Office. Many famous actors and comedians got their start in improv, like Tina Fey, Steve Carrell, Amy Poehler, Stephen Colbert, lots of SNL people...

Each performance and workshop is a unique one; improv is different every time.

Who can do improv?

Anyone can be an improviser; you just need the right mindset and the willingness to take a risk or two. Learning improv is great fun, and performing improv is even more fun, as scary as it may seem at first! Most importantly, we make sure that every class is supportive and judgment-free, and that everybody takes care of each other.

Many students have told us that they've started feeling more confident, more open, happier and braver after the experience. The principles of improv can be applied to personal and professional development. We can guarantee that the more you put into improv, the more you'll get out of it, especially over the long run. If you're still feeling nervous, get a friend to do it with you!

What is The Improv Company?

We’re a small, young theatre company in Singapore dedicated to creating, supporting and teaching excellent improv. Do you teach improv or do shows?

Both! We teach drop-in improv classes (we call it Improv for Everyone) on 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 4-6pm. These are basic classes designed to introduce people to the concept of improv comedy. We also run introductory-level classes where we teach the fundamentals of improv in a structured manner – those are our Improv 101: Learning to Play classes.

We also conduct improv-based workshops and training sessions for corporations on an ad-hoc basis.

And as for shows, we have at least one show a month. Details can be found here on our calendar or on our Facebook page. If in doubt, check Facebook; we're more regular there.

How much do you charge?

We try to charge as little as possible, because we want improv to spread! Our rates are subject to change, but usually:

  • Improv for Everyone workshops (2h): SGD10
  • Improv 101, 201, 301 and 302 classes (5-6w): SGD300 - discounts may apply
  • Shows (1h): SGD5-15
  • Corporate workshops: Depends on number of people, type of work, and so on - please email us with more details so we can give you an accurate quote!

Can I perform with / join The Improv Company?

We’re always looking to connect with fellow improvisers! If you’re interested in joining us or performing with us, drop us an email at contact@improv.sg and we'll be delighted to get in touch. If you're a student, feel free to approach any of our trainers any time and let them know. We also happily provide support to our students if they'd like to start their own improv team.
